Traveling stitches are fun and all, but proper double-knit cables are really phenomenal. This pattern combines true double-knit cables with textured double-knitting to create that “pop” that cables have — but on both layers.

In addition, there's a labor-intensive but wholly worthwhile double-knit i-cord cast-on that gives the edge that finished look and also echoes the shape of the cables. And, for completeness' sake, there's also a headband version which uses a corresponding double-knit i-cord bind-off.
