A double-knit lace cowl

SPRING WILLOW

In the appendix of my book Extreme Double-Knitting, there is a nod to the concept of double-knit lace — but no patterns that use it. I released one pattern that used double-knit lace in an ArtYarns book, although it was not really the best application of the technique. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve worked much in the technique and I felt it was about time to show what I’ve learned since my book was published.

The lace pattern in this cowl is modified from one that I especially enjoyed in one of Barbara Walker’s treasuries. I use color changed “rivers” both to pick out interesting elements in the lace as well as to lock the fabric together.

One great thing about double-knit lace is that it can ride the line between cozy and breezy — effectively, this cowl is a 3-season garment!

This pattern is available as a standalone pattern, but is also in my book Double or Nothing: Reversible Knitting for the Adventurous.
